I got the Rustler XL-5 sometime ago. It didn't take long for me to hear about the Velineon System. Everyone kept telling me to get this system. My Titan 12t motor burned out and so I decided it was a good time to upgrade to this.

Was it worth it? Yes, a THOUSAND TIMES YES! I cannot believe how much more power I have. My Rustler used to go around 25mph, and now it can easily reach 45mph with the 8.4v stock battery. When I put my 9.6v batery in, it reached 55mph. It probably can go faster but I run out of room before I can really reach top speed. It's actually rather scary going so fast. You crash at that speed and you'll break something. In fact I broke my Right Aluminum Turnbuckle on the first day.

So get this upgrade asap. You won't regret it. BUT, be ready to replace some broken parts.

I've had the Velineon system in my Slash for just under a year now, it really makes an animal of it. Some side effects may include bald tires though. The stock Slash tires gets torn up when you run this Velineon system on Pavement. It drops in the Slash no problem too, easy swap, only requiring you to unscrew the old parts, and screw in the new.

With this system in place I've clocked my Slash at 35 MPH using the optional pinion gear supplied with the Slash. Which isn't crazy fast, but I'm also only using a 7.4 volt LiPo.

Okay, now for the primary reason for writing this review. So, the Electronic Speed Controller (the VXL-3S) had died on me earlier in June, which was well after the 30 day warranty. I found it odd that it failed though because the unit never did any thermal shutdown, and if it did, I would of bought the optional fan. So, I'm not sure at all what caused it's failure and I was definitely bummed.

I contacted Traxxas and they simply told me...Read more

Brushless dc motors are AMAZING. So much less rotor drag and less friction, only coggs a little bit when given slight throttle IE 1:28 out of WOT will crawl but not very well, sensored is best for crawling. This works great for off road and speed runs. Does get quite hot. I run a stock stampede 2x4 19/90 gearing wich is stock for good speed and torque for off roading. I monitored temps in long length grass, after completly draining my stock 3000mah 7 cell traxxas battery, motor temps were 147F and esc was about 136F. No fans no extra cooling fins, with the body on and BASHING AS HARD AS I COULD. i porposely was trying to see how hot this system would run under the most agressive extreme stressed conditions,stop/go/wot/reverse. Etc. All out and seemed to be just fine. I highly reccomend getting a IR tempature gauge as well,i use the duratrax flashpoint. Finger touch test isnt very reliable for measureing motor tempature. 150-180 is a good safe zone, anything over 180F itll damage the rotor...Read more
