Summary: Without a doubt, the best (cheap) micro heli that I've ever used... 2010-07-03
Comment: This is a co-axial heli, which means that it's pretty much designed for hovering. Right off the bat, its stability when hovering is the first thing you'll observe about this heli vs a comparably priced single-blade heli.
Trim control works beautifully. You'll probably need to tweak the little knob on the remote at the beginning of every flight and maybe a couple of times during an extended flight, but it's easy to find the sweet spot and ignore it thereafter. Just playing with the trim control and thrust, you can have this heli hovering almost perfectly still in the air with little or no practice. That level of control in a heli this size is astonishing.
If you're used to Air Hogs and similar micro heli toys, this one's going to blow your socks off. Right, left, forward and back controls actually work. With just a few minutes of practice you can have it flying around the house at a decent clip without any collisions and then land it on a dime.
The USB charger is great. I love not having to deplete the batteries on the remote to charge the heli. The charger lights up when charging is complete. Charging via USB takes a bit over a half hour.
Battery life is one area that could use improvement. With other helis this size, a 10 minute battery life is okay because you'll have crashed it so many times in that period that you'll probably be ready for a break that quickly. This heli is so much fun to fly that I could keep playing with it for an hour if it could stay up that long. I wish that it had removable battery packs like larger helis do.
I wasn't too sure about it using an IR remote because that restricts it to line-of-sight and not much distance, but it has worked just fine so far. *UPDATE: It will not work in direct sunlight. Another reason to keep it indoors.
While you can use it outside, I suggest that you avoid doing so when there's any breeze. Like all helis this size, it is not easily controlled when there's any wind. Inside the house where there's no wind at all is where it shines.
The Syma S105 sets a standard that manufacturers of other RC heli toys in the same price range can only hope to someday match.
Summary: Syma S105 2010-03-03
Comment: ordered this helicopter along with 3 other helicopters. 3 from Syma and one off brand helicopter. I ordered multiple helicopters because the only ones I have flown have been 2 channel and if one broke I would have backup. I ordered the Syma S107 and S105 at the same time, and the S107 arrived first and the S105 arrived the next day. On my frist flight of the S107 I was suprised how stable and smooth the flight was. The box says 14 and up but I think anyone could control this helicopter. It goes up, down, left, right, forward, and backwards, all at a balanced speed thats good for indoor flight. It is not too slow to be boring or too fast that you can't controll it. The trim button on the controller is pretty much not needed because it does not spin out of control. I still havnt adjusted the trim after about 20 flights. Also, both Syma helicopters are VERY durable since they are made of metal and hard plastic. The blades are also durable. There are some differences in the S107 and S105. The S105 is slightly wider and slightly longer. It also has two LED lights on each side and one in the front, a total of 6, which can be cool or annoying, it just depends on preference. The s107 has a single light on the front. The S105 seems to spin out more than the S107 and is more difficult to trim. This is an obvious flaw that was addressed with the newer S107, because it does not spin out at all. They both can be charged with the controller or through a USB port on your computer which is good if you don't want to waste your batteries on your controller. They both use 6 AA batteries in the controller. Both helicopters are extremely durable and have been crashed several times. My only complaint with them is the flight time is only around 5 minutes, although I don't have anything to compare it to because the other 2 helicopters I ordered are still not here yet after about a week and a half. Also, the only option for shipping is standard shipping. Overall I would recommend the S107 over the S105 because of the trim issue with the S105, but both are excellent helicopters and they are a very good price.
