The package comes with the tank, controller and IR target. The tanks requires 6 double A batteries. I would suggest rechargeable. You can play with the tanks for about 2 hours on a set of batteries before the tanks noticeably slow and become less likely to hit a target. The controller requires a 9 volt and the target requires 2 AAA batteries. The target will last quite some time. We have yet to replace those or the controller batteries.The tanks seem to do well on almost any surface. Yes, if you create ramps, you can climb stairs or steps. The tanks are plastic and while they are fairly rugged, one has to remember that they are not indestructable. The manufacturer has provided spare tread parts in case the treads do come off.
